Within
a few years after the birth of cinematography, Alfred Haddon, the leader
of the 1898 Cambridge Anthropological Expedition to the Torres Strait,
took a 35 mm Newman and Guardia cine camera to the field. This pioneering
use of film in anthropological research resulted in five short films taken
in September 1898 on Mer Island. The sequences include fire-making, dance,
and a masked performance of the climax of the Malo Bomai ceremony.
